Yorkiefest III
|
Nancy, Ruby and I traveled to Hamilton, Ohio for
Yorkiefest III - a gathering of Yorkie owners. We drove down from Chicago
and stayed at the Hamiltonian, Inn. Saw a lot of Yorkies - had a great
time.

At an RV show in South Bend, Indiana over the summer, I saw a woman with a shirt that had an embroidered Yorkie on the shoulder. When we got home, I went online in search of one of these shirts. Well, I never found the shirt, but I did run across the Yorkiefest III website. It sounded pretty humorous to me. I showed it to Nancy and she went gaga over it and said "we're going"! She signed us up for every event.
We drove down to Hamilton, Ohio on Friday. It was a pleasant 6 hour drive from the Chicago area. The Barktoberfest Costume Ball was held that night at the Hamiltonian Inn. We stayed there as well.
The Ball was interesting. I'm guessing about 80 people attended with about 50 dogs. It was even held in the Ballroom of the Hamiltonian. There was a cash bar, a professional photographer taking portraits, a buffet style appetizer dinner and more. All the dogs and even some of their owners were dressed to the nines!
The room and tables were decorated in a Halloween theme and there were doggy and human treats abound. There was a raffle and a gift exchange too. It was a really nice evening.
The next day, Barktoberfest moved over to the Hamilton Fairgrounds. On the grounds were about a dozen vendors, setup with their booths, selling Yorkie and other doggie stuff. Nancy bought Ruby a vest style harness and a frilly purple collar. Inside one of the buildings, at the beginning of the day, a local church pastor blessed the dogs, their owners and the day. While I missed it, the was to have been a proclamation made by the Mayor's office proclaiming the day "Yorkie Day".
Among the other events and speakers that day, one thing I found really entertaining was the Yorkie Flyball event. This is an event where Yorkies run full speed, jumping over hurdles and at the end, grab a ball in their mouth, then run back over the course and the hurdles to the start/finish line. In team events, it's done relay style and is timed. It was truly amazing to see a Yorkie do this. I took some good video of it as well.
Saturday night we were back in the ballroom of the Hamiltonian for the After Fest PJ Pawty - a party with your Yorkies with you and your dog in your pajamas. This was an informal gathering to talk Yorkie stuff, compare etc. We also said goodbye to some of the people we met over the weekend as they were heading back to Virginia (9 hours) first thing in the morning.
Sunday was the Brunch - the final event..........................................
