More Memphis – Gus’s Fried Chicken (again), Mud Island and Rendezvous BBQ

Thursday, April 17th
We worked from the RV this morning, then around lunch-time, headed into downtown Memphis. We decided to go back to Gus’s Fried Chicken for another round. Once again, really good chicken. This time, I had 2 wings and a leg. They mistakenly brought me 2 legs and no wings. Win – an extra leg at n/c plus the missing wings! I love white chicken meat but I also love the moistness and flavor of chicken legs.

From Gus’s, we went to the Tennessee Welcome Center and free-parked the truck.

We walked across the street and up the hill a bit to the Mud Island ticket center and tram.   Nancy bought our tickets, we boarded the monorail and headed over to Mud Island River Park.  This is the first time there for us.

After walking the entire of the Mississippi River (model :), we were tired.  We headed back to the RV for a rest (a nap for Nancy and work for me, but with my feet up :).

For dinner on our last night in the Memphis area, it was time to finally try Charlie Vergos’ Rendezvous for the famous “Memphis Dry Rub” style ribs.CVR_Sign3CVR_Sign2

Sorry Charlie Vergos - I did not care for your ribs :(

After dinner, we took a stroll down Beale Street. We planned to have a drink at BB Kings but they wanted $5 each to get in. Sorry BB.

We decided to stop into A. Schwab. Always fun to see all the nostalgic stuff.schwab3

A. Schwab’s has a Soda Fountain, so we decided to have dessert there. I had a vanilla and hot fudge malt.Schwabs Soda Fountain MenuMalt at Schwabs

We continued our Beale Street stroll.

We ended up at Silky O’Sullivan’s. Much quieter than BB Kings would have been.silky-osullivans-facade
